Chapter Fifteen

I followed Puck through the winding alleys of New York, trying to ignore the way the world seemed to shimmer at the edges of my vision. It was like someone had cranked up the contrast on reality, and I was seeing things that shouldn't exist. Or maybe I was just losing my mind. At this point, both options seemed equally likely.

"So, Tinkerbell," I said, breaking the tense silence, "where exactly are we going? Please tell me it's not another interdimensional funhouse. I don't think my stomach can handle any more magical rollercoasters."

Puck's giggle echoed off the grimy walls. "Oh, my dear mortal, we're going somewhere much more interesting. The Bazaar of Broken Dreams!"

I blinked, trying to process that. "The Bazaar of Broken Dreams? Sounds cheery. Let me guess, they specialize in shattered hopes and gently used disillusionment?"

Morgana's warm laugh sent a shiver down my spine. "It's not quite that dire, Stephen. The Bazaar is a hidden marketplace where all manner of magical items and information can be found... for the right price."

"Great," I muttered. "Because our last foray into supernatural shopping went so well. Anyone bring coupons for 'Buy one cosmic disaster, get one free'?"

As we turned another corner, the world seemed to... shift. One moment we were in a dingy New York alley, the next we were standing at the entrance to what looked like the lovechild of a Renaissance fair and a acid trip.

Tents and stalls of every color imaginable stretched as far as the eye could see. The air was thick with the scent of incense and something else, something ancient and unknowable. Beings of all shapes and sizes milled about, some looking vaguely human, others... decidedly not.

"Welcome," Puck announced with a flourish, "to the Bazaar of Broken Dreams!"

I swallowed hard, trying to take it all in. "Well," I said, aiming for nonchalance and probably missing by a mile, "I guess we're not in New York anymore."

"Oh, we are," Puck said cheerily, "we're just in a pocket dimension near Grand Central Station."

"Huh," I said and followed him deeper into the marketplace.

As we made our way through the crowded marketplace, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched. Every shadow seemed to hide prying eyes, every whispered conversation felt like it was about us.

"So," I said, sidling up to Ella, "what exactly are we looking for here? A 'Phoenix Tears for Dummies' guidebook? A map to the nearest cosmic void with a speech impediment?"

Ella's cool voice cut through my rambling. "Information, Stephen. We need to find someone who knows about phoenix tears and how to obtain them."

"Right," I nodded. "Because I'm sure there's a thriving market for the tears of immortal fire birds. Probably right next to the unicorn horn polish and dragon scale exfoliator."

As we passed a stall selling what looked suspiciously like bottled emotions (Now with 50% more existential dread!), I felt that strange warmth inside me pulse again. The world around me seemed to sharpen, colors becoming more vivid, sounds clearer.

"Uh, guys?" I said, my voice sounding distant to my own ears.
